A Lovely Year of Finishes - February Finish

I am so pleased to say that I finished my February goal for ALYoF! My first finish was a pillow cover that started out as my block from the January HMQG meeting. It was my first attempt at improv piecing, and I have come to realized that it is not my cup of tea.

I am a planner.... Everything always has to have a plan, a clear route, and a purpose. You can ask Jeff how stressful it is planning a vacation with me :) Improv piecing drove me insane because I felt like I didn't have a purpose and in the end I hated the block I made. But I knew my sister would love it (it's her favorite colors) so like they say "one person's trash, is another person's treasure".

The pillow cover ended up being 23"x23" and I quilted it in an all over loopy design with purple thread.

I put in a hidden zipper for the closure because I always have issues with envelope backed pillows. This way I know it wont pop open and not look cute.

The finish that I am really excited about is my Lucky Stars QAL quilt! I started this baby last summer, and I finally finished quilting it last week!
It sat around as a finished top for a few weeks because I couldn't figure out how I wanted to quilt it. Then I finally decided to do straight line quilting and I am so glad I did!

I just love the texture it created, even though to took FOR-EV-ER to quilt!

I'm not going to say too much about this quilt here because I am writing a seperate post just for it with all the juicy details about the pattern, fabrics, etc!

I am so stoked that so far during ALYoF, I have met every goal I have set for myself! 2 months down, 10 to go! Plus I am starting to make a dent in my hefty WIP list.

Now I need to decided what I want to do for my March goal :)

  5. I've never tried improv piecing but that pillow is beautiful!! I love the fabric choices and especially the loopy free motion quilting. Definitely another persons treasure - it even looks great with the quilt! I can imagine that the texture of that quilt is amazing, I have to always remind myself that it is worth the effort to do something like that because the finished result. Great work!

  8. Um, your Lucky Stars is AMAZING! I love the colors you picked. It looks so different from the others I saw. I saw it a lot in Happy Go Lucky, this is my favorite by a landslide:) You know, I have yet to try improv piecing myself! I bought a book on it recently, so I am going to give it a try. Yours looks great, love the patchwork look to it.
