Not so Selfish Sewing
Well I broke my promise to only sew for myself this week, and I made William this beyond adorable Toddler Backpack. I just couldn't help myself. This fabric has been calling my name for a while now and I finally sat down and did something with it. I used Made by Rae's Toddler Backpack pattern to make the backpack. This pattern is fantastic! The directions are clear and concise and the bag came together super quick.
Let's take a moment and talk about this awesome fabric. When I saw it online at Terry's Fabrics, I just knew I had to have it. My dream car is a red and white vintage Volkswagen Van. Seriously if I could have any car in the entire world, that is what I would choose without giving it a second thought.
The fabric is a fantastic weight. It is upholstery weight rather than a quilting cotton, so it has a bit more body to it. I still have a decent amout of it left, and I think I am going to make a Weekender Bag out of it.
I fussy cut the side panel to have that adorable blue van right in the center :) This was my very first attempt at sewing with piping. I was so scared when I sewed everything together, that I basted all the seams first so I could make sure I didn't mess up.
Of course William has already loaded it up with his toys :) I should have waited until I put the lining in to show it to him. I'll have to do it while he is sleeping, but I'll wait until it's not Selfish Sewing week anymore ;)
I used a thicker utility zipper so that it will be easier for William to open and close. Plus I really like the look of the thicker zipper.
I love that I went with the blue piping and the red zipper and straps. I almost went with red on red, but I think that would have been too much.
Seeing how much William loves his new backpack just melts my heart and makes me feel awesome :) So I guess technically that means I sewed this for me right?
If you get the chance, check out the awesome fabric Terry's has to offer. They have some adorable prints that I haven't seen anywhere else.

This is so adorable, and I think anytime you enjoy making something, it's a little bit "selfish."
